Welcome

Cardiovascular disease (including heart disease and stroke) is the leading cause of death in North Dakota and the United States. People of all ages and backgrounds can get the condition; however, it is largely preventable.

Know Your Numbers

About 1 in 3 U.S. adults have high blood pressure, a key risk factor for cardiovascular disease and other serious health complications.

Know your blood pressure numbers and visit with your health care provider about healthy lifestyle changes to maintain healthy blood pressure levels.

The Heart Disease & Stroke Prevention Program works to improve cardiovascular health through public health strategies and policies that promote:

  • Healthy lifestyles and behaviors.
  • Healthy environments and communities.
  • Control of blood pressure and cholesterol levels.
  • Reduction of sodium intake.
  • Coordinated, integrated systems of care.
  • Access to evidence-based preventive care, treatment and cardiovascular disease management.

The program does this by facilitating effective collaborations and partnerships across the state. We translate cardiovascular disease data and research into practice through our epidemiologic evidence and community planning expertise for public health, health-care professionals and the public.
